Getting a Car Loan with Bad Credit in British Columbia

What “bad credit” means to a BC auto lender
When people hear “bad credit,” they usually picture a single three-digit number standing between them and a car. In practice, a subprime auto lender working with applicants across British Columbia looks at a wider picture than that. Your credit score is one input among several — a rough guide to how past credit accounts were managed, not a fixed gate that decides who gets to apply.
Alongside the score, lenders weigh how stable your income has been, how long you’ve been at your current job or self-employed, what your housing cost looks like relative to your income, and whether you can put down a deposit. Two applicants with the same credit score can end up with very different offers, because the rest of their financial picture is different. That’s why a low score on its own never disqualifies someone from applying here — it’s one data point, not the whole file.
What subprime auto lenders actually look at
Concretely, lenders reviewing an application from a BC applicant with damaged credit tend to look at a handful of factors together, not any single one in isolation: employment status and how long you’ve held your current job, gross monthly income, the type of income (employment, self-employment, retirement, long-term disability, or another source), your monthly housing cost and whether you rent or own, and how much of a down payment or trade-in you can bring to the deal.
They also look at the vehicle itself — the loan-to-value ratio matters, so a more modest vehicle relative to your income is often easier to finance than a stretch purchase. None of this is secret or unusual; it’s the same set of factors most auto lenders use, just weighted differently for applicants who’ve had credit setbacks along the way.
What you need before you apply
Nothing needs to be uploaded to complete the application on this site. It asks for information about the vehicle you’re looking for, your monthly budget, your postal code, your employment and income situation, your housing costs, and your contact details — all typed directly into the form, with no documents attached at this stage.
Later in the process, once you’ve spoken with our team and decided to move forward with a specific lender, that lender may ask for supporting paperwork: recent pay stubs, proof of address, a valid driver’s licence, and banking information for the loan itself. That’s normal for any auto loan, not something unique to a subprime file, and it only comes up after the initial conversation — never at the application stage.
Does applying involve a credit check?
Yes — and it’s worth being clear about how. When you submit the application on this site, that submission constitutes your consent for Go Kia Richmond and its financing partners to obtain your credit report to assess your financing options, exactly as set out in the Terms of Use you agree to when you submit.
That information is used for one purpose: reviewing your financing options and matching you with a lender. It isn’t shared for unrelated marketing or any other use — and if anything about the process is unclear, the person who calls you back can walk you through exactly where your application stands.
Down payments and trade-ins
A down payment or a trade-in vehicle isn’t required to apply, but either one can open up more options once a lender reviews your file. Putting money down, or trading in a vehicle you already own, reduces how much needs to be financed — something that can matter more for a subprime file than for a conventional one.
If you don’t have a down payment or a trade-in, that’s still fine — plenty of approved deals go through without either. It’s simply one more factor a lender may weigh alongside your income and employment history, not a requirement to apply in the first place.
What happens after you apply
Once you submit the application, someone from our team calls you — usually the same business day — to talk through your situation and your options. There’s no automated decision on the other end of that call, and no obligation attached to it; it’s a conversation, not a commitment.
From there, if you’d like to move forward, we work our lender relationships to find options that fit your situation — and you’ll always know where your application stands at each step.
